What is an SSCC-18?

The SSCC consists of the following components:

Application Identifier (AI): A two-digit identifier (00) that specifies the SSCC.
Extension Digit: A single digit (0-9) that differentiates multiple SSCCs from the same source. This number is usually assigned by GS-1.
GS1 Company Prefix: 7-9 digits identifying the company producing the SSCC. The company prefix is assigned by GS-1.
Serial Number: A unique number for each shipping container.
Check Digit: A calculated digit that verifies SSCC accuracy.

An SSCC (Serial Shipping Container Code) is a “license plate” for logistics units like cases and pallets that allows shipments to be accurately tracked through the supply chain. SSCC-18 is an 18-digit numeric identifier encoded into a barcode that can be scanned to monitor a container’s journey. Based on GS-1 standards, SSCC-18 codes are compatible with retailer and logistics company EDI and Advanced Ship Notice systems, ensuring efficiency and accuracy.
